Titian and the landscape: an exhibition in Pieve di Cadore for the 450th anniversary of the artist's death

From July 18 to October 18, 2026, the Palace of the Magnificent Community of Cadore will host an exhibition dedicated to Titian and the landscape, with three of his paintings exceptionally loaned for the occasion.

From July 18 to October 18, 2026, the Palace of the Magnificent Community of Cadore, in Pieve di Cadore, will host the exhibition Titian and the Landscape, the second chapter of an exhibition project launched on the occasion of the Winter Olympics. The aim is to delve into the contribution the great Cadore painter made to the transformation of landscape representation, profoundly influencing Venetian and European painting.

The exhibition is promoted by the Magnifica Comunità di Cadore and the Titian and Cadore Study Center Foundation, in collaboration with the Municipality of Pieve di Cadore. The project, conceived by Bernard Aikema and curated by Thomas Dalla Costa with the support of the Foundation’s Scientific Committee, is one of the most significant events in the celebratory program dedicated to the 450th anniversary of the artist’s death, “Titianus Cadorinus 1576-2026.”

The exhibition aims to combine scientific rigor and enhancement of the artistic heritage, bringing back to the territory that was Titian’s birthplace important works by the painter. In fact, after the exceptional exhibition of the Pala Gozzi, the new itinerary offers an opportunity to explore the cultural and figurative origins of Titian’s interest in landscape and the impact his landscapes had on European artists of later generations.

The centerpiece of the exhibition will be three paintings by Titian exceptionally loaned for the occasion, flanked by a significant number of period drawings and prints made by artists such as Lucas Cranach, Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt and Antoine Watteau. The dialogue between these authors will make it possible to reconstruct the diffusion and evolution of the landscape language developed by the Cadore painter, highlighting his legacy in the European art scene.
