Umbria as seen by Steve McCurry, on display in Montefalco with never-before-seen shots

From Dec. 4, 2025, to May 3, 2026, the San Francesco Museum Complex in Montefalco will host "Steve McCurry - Umbria," an exhibition curated by Biba Giacchetti that brings together iconic shots and never-before-seen images dedicated to the region's places, people and events.

Montefalco (Perugia) is hosting from Dec. 4, 2025 to May 3, 2026 the Steve McCurry - Umbria exhibition, curated by Biba Giacchetti, which features sixty photographs including well-known shots and unpublished images by Steve McCurry dedicated to the region. The opening is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 5:30 p.m. at the San Francesco Museum Complex. The exhibition is promoted by the Municipality of Montefalco with the contribution of the Region of Umbria, in collaboration with Orion57, and the organization is entrusted to Maggioli Culture and Tourism. This is the American photographer’s return to Umbria after more than a decade since his first exhibition dedicated to the region. McCurry brings to Montefalco some of the best-known images from his personal archive, flanked by photographs never before exhibited to the public. The exhibition takes the form of a visual narrative of the region and the communities that inhabit it. The sixty photographs on display depict Umbrian places, people, events and landscapes, offering an intimate and detailed look at life in the region. The exhibition includes shots taken on different occasions during McCurry’s travels in Umbria, documenting both the best-known locations such as Assisi, Perugia, Spoleto, Gubbio, Bevagna and Trevi, as well as lesser-known corners and unexpected views. Each image conveys the photographer’s emotions and attention to the people and territories encountered, returning a vision that combines reportage and personal narrative.

“I felt it was time to return with an exhibition to a place that had given me so much,” explains Steve McCurry. “The years spent working on Sensational Umbria were filled with warmth, curiosity and unexpected discoveries. Returning to Montefalco with known images and a series of unpublished ones was like closing a circle or, perhaps, opening a new one. There was still much to say about the spirit of this region and I wanted to share it.”

The installation is designed to accompany the visitor through a coherent but free narrative: the photographs dialogue with each other to build a narrative thread made up of encounters, festivals, rituals and everyday moments; they do not follow a rigid chronological or geographical order. The choice to alternate famous and unpublished shots aims to offer a complete picture of McCurry’s relationship with Umbria, highlighting the charm of its landscapes and the vitality of local communities. In addition to the documentation of places, the exhibition highlights the photographer’s ability to capture the emotions of the subjects portrayed. McCurry’s return to Umbria confirms the photographer’s ongoing interest in the region and his desire to deepen his knowledge of its inhabitants, collective rituals and landscapes that characterize its identity. The exhibition is therefore positioned as a documentary testimony, useful for understanding the transformations of the territory and social dynamics over the years. Among the shots on display, some depict moments related to traditional festivals, religious celebrations and community gatherings, documenting practices and rituals that characterize the region’s cultural identity. Others are devoted to natural and urban landscapes, with special attention to the details and lighting that define the atmosphere of the places. The variety of subjects therefore makes the exhibition comprehensive and able to offer different keys to the visitor’s interpretation.
