A taller Christ is being built in Brazil than the one in Rio de Janeiro

In Encantado, southern Brazil, the third-tallest statue of Christ in the world is under construction. It would surpass the Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro.

In southern Brazil, in the city of Encantado, construction is underway on an even larger Christ than the one in Rio de Janeiro. The latter, known as Christ the Redeemer, towers over the top of Corcovado and is now a symbol of Rio de Janeiro: it will be 90 years old this year. But Encantado wants to compete, building an even taller one (141 feet that corresponds to about 43 meters)that will be titled Christ the Protector.

It was designed by sculptor Genésio Gomes Moura together with his son Markus, and the new specimen will also have outstretched arms, similarly to Christ the Redeemer. It will be made of steel and concrete. The work was funded by the Friends of Christ Association.

When finished, the Christ the Redeemer will be the third tallest statue of Christ in the world: in fact, a 75-meter-high one is under construction in Mexico; in second place is an existing statue in Poland. The Christ the Redeemer, on the other hand, measures 38 meters in height.

The head and arms have already been installed, and pictures show that the scaffolding supports will be reinforced with concrete. At Christ’s heart will be a viewing window from which visitors can take photos of the valley below.
