While waiting for the Special Superintendence of Rome to officially pronounce on the restoration that made an angel in the Chapel of the Crucifix in the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Lucina take on the face of Giorgia Meloni , the Vicariate of Rome has spoken out with a note on the incident. The Vicariate, in particular, pointed out that both the Soprintendenza, the entity that owns the building, namely the Fondo Edifici di Culto del Ministero per l’Interno, and the Vicariate’s own Office for Worship Buildings had been aware since 2023 of a restoration action that, according to communications between the entities, would be conducted “without anything being modified or added.” The change to the angel’s face, the note explained, was therefore “an initiative of the decorator not communicated to the competent bodies.” The Vicariate undertook to look into the matter with the parish priest Monsignor Daniele Micheletti and consider possible initiatives.
