Marco Ciatti leaves the Opificio delle Pietre Dure after 38 years. Farewell to colleagues

After 38 years of work at the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, 10 of them as superintendent, Marco Ciatti is retiring and leaving the institute, bidding farewell to his colleagues: "We must not close ourselves in an ivory tower."

Art historian Marco Ciatti left theOpificio delle Pietre Dure last Aug. 1: the Opificio’s superintendent retired after more than 41 years of service in the state administration. Ciatti had joined the Opificio in 1984, after spending the first three years of his career at the Soprintendenza di Siena. He had become superintendent of the Opificio in 2012.

Ciatti wrote a letter to his colleagues at the Opificio to say goodbye and thank you to his collaborators, and in general to all those who, the letter reads, “have contributed to the great results that the OPD has achieved over the years that have allowed us to achieve a role of excellence at the international level.”

“I also want to remind you,” Ciatti continues, “that only commitment and constant work are the secret of all this, along certain methodological lines that I consider of fundamental importance. The centrality of conservation projects, understood as all-round research projects on the works, which are the driving force behind our three lines of action: operations, research and training. Thus, applied research in solving the real problems presented by the works with consequent innovations, and the whole the close relationship with teaching, with the three activities always close in a constant synergy of purpose, without separation. The excellent results achieved by our alumni constitute one of the greatest satisfactions for me. To support all this we need facilities, equipment, administrative management, data and documentation storage, promotion of results, and laboratory security, all activities that are therefore fundamental to the smooth functioning of the whole.”

“We must then not close ourselves in an ivory tower,” the art historian concludes, “but keep ourselves open to collaborations with the scholarly and research worlds, with which we have over time woven an important network of relationships. There is certainly no shortage of critical issues, but we have always tried to address and resolve them in the best possible way, aiming for the good of the Institute and all those who work there. I am sure that the skills and quality of all of you will be able to carry on my work and achieve even better results, I sincerely wish you all the best!”

Colleagues at the Opificio reciprocated the farewell of Marco Ciatti who, they say from the institution, “has ably led the Institute over the past decade by aiming at the triple objective of ’operations, research and training,’ which has now become a motto for everyone, and they wish him well in his well-deserved retirement and the opportunity to devote himself to his affections and his many scientific and educational interests.”
