Uffizi, travertine wall tiles in bathrooms give way, visitor injured

At the Uffizi a portion of a bathroom wall covering collapsed. One visitor was injured. Check carried out on the entire floor.

In Florence, a visitor was injured in her foot when a portion of the travertine cladding of a wall in the Uffizi Baths broke off. The woman was taken to the hospital for investigation but is not serious.

The incident occurred on May 2, and surveys carried out by the museum’s technicians revealed that the cladding in question is not in good condition: in particular, the supports fail to ensure that the travertine is adequately sealed. This is because, explains director Eike Schmidt, it was a badly conducted intervention, some 20 years ago. “We were all very frightened,” the director explained toAnsa, “also because periodic inspections did not reveal any particular critical issues. Now from the examination of the yielded material it has emerged that work done 20 years ago was shoddy.” An inspection has already been carried out on all the floor coverings in the basement of the gallery (where the bathrooms are located), and “fortunately,” the director stressed, “it did not uncover any other problems.”
