The Municipality of Venice has approved the final project for the conservative restoration of the entire outer wall face, stringcourses, architectural and ornamental elements of theVenice Arsenal, which runs along Rio della Tana, Rio San Daniele and Rio delle Vergini. The intervention is part of the building complex “Arsenale di Venezia,” which has been declared of special cultural interest.
In detail, the works will affect the north and west banks of Rio della Tana and Rio san Daniele, from the iron bridge at Fondamenta della Tana, to the Porta Nuova Tower, at the entrance to the Venice Arsenal Dockyard. The height extension of the intervention extends from the impost height of the foundations of the margining on the bottom of the aforementioned canals to the upper battlements. The margining is entirely overlooked by the Venice Arsenal’s boundary wall, and often the same wall is the exterior wall of buildings in the arsenal compendium in use by the Venice Biennale of Architecture Foundation. Some of the buildings that have exterior walls that also constitute the perimeter wall of the Arsenal are the subject of autonomous restoration and architectural work.
The margins of Rio della Tana, which affect the buildings in the Marceglia S62 area including the Torre di mezzo, the Corderie S61 and the tower of St. Peter and Paul, show signs of structural instability. Along Rio san Daniele, affecting the Artillery building S54 and the Isolotto building S53, the lower part of the margins is characterized by obvious “digging” due to wave motion since it lacks stone basement. The section along Rio delle Vergini with the Tese building S81-82-83-84, including the whole wall of the Isolotto delle Vergini has been affected by some works carried out by the Magistrato alle Acque around the 2000s; nevertheless, there are some through cracks caused by possible differential subsidence. In addition, the crenellation surveyed appears to be one of the most fragile elements of the wall system presenting multiple gaps as well as cracks.
“Our commitment to the recovery of the Arsenal continues,” said Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro. “As the City of Venice we have consolidated relations with national institutions such as the Ministries of Defense and Culture and also directly with the Biennale and the Navy, falling within the fourteen strategic projects included by the government in the Plan for Major Cultural Attractions. I remember how a significant part of the compendium was unused and unusable and lacked redevelopment. We in recent years have managed to recover the necessary resources to transform them into spaces for events, such as the Boat Show and the Salon of High Craftsmanship, which this year, in its first edition, recorded 15 thousand visitors, but also for the upcoming Carnival. International events that have turned the spotlight back on this part of our city and the promotion of its excellence. The interventions aimed at rehabilitating the Arsenal will also lead us to have new tense and a new navigable waterway, along Rio delle Galeazze, which for the city means not only time savings for those who have to enter the city from the North Lagoon and vice versa, but also demonstrates that we are able to seize and take advantage of opportunities for the benefit of those who experience Venice.”
“The project involves an investment of 25 million euros,” explains Councillor for Public Works Francesca Zaccariotto, “already budgeted for with funding from national resources for the years 2021 to 2026, from the National Plan for Complementary Investments to the National Plan for Recovery and Resilience. It is part of a total allocation of 170 million euros, underwritten by the City of Venice, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Defense, of which, almost 105 million, will be precisely earmarked for the rehabilitation of the Arsenal area under concession to the Foundation and the other 65 million for other interventions in the city, including on the Lido, Forte Marghera, Bissuola Park and other places in need of major renovation and maintenance. A plan voted by the Venice City Council.”
