Michelangelo Pistoletto celebrates Pompeii with his Third Paradise

For National Landscape Day, Michelangelo Pistoletto brings his Third Paradise to Pompeii to celebrate the rebirth of the archaeological site.

On the occasion of the National Landscape Day on Tuesday, March 14, Michelangelo Pistoletto, one of Italy’s greatest contemporary artists, has called for a flash-mob in the Palestra Grande in Pompeii to bring to the ancient ruins his project Third Paradise, symbolized by a mathematical sign of infinity composed of three circles: the two at the extremes symbolize nature and artifice while the central one is the fusion of the two. “Third Paradise,” the project’s website explains, “signifies the transition to an unprecedented stage of planetary civilization, which is indispensable to ensure humankind’s survival. To this end, it is first necessary to re-form the principles and ethical behaviors that guide common life.”

During the flash mob, Pistoletto will initiate a collective action that will culminate in aninstallation that will have the dual purpose of recalling the Third Paradise and celebrating the rebirth of Pompeii. The event, starting at 10 a.m., will involve visitors to Pompeii’s archaeological excavations, students, Soprintendenza staff and those who happen to be passing by. The installation will be made with materials prepared ad hoc, which will be arranged by the participants during the event, carried out by the Special Superintendence of Pompeii in collaboration with CittàdellArte-Fondazione Pistoletto, with the contribution of URBAN VISION main sponsor of the event and the collaboration of Edilcostruzioni, ALSA Pompei, ISI, L&scape, Eidos, RP Rosario Petrucci, DG Scavi, IOTA Restauro, TMSTecno, Zi Caterina, Villa dei Cesari.
