Tonight, at 9:25 p.m. on Rai1, a new season of Alberto Angela's Ulysses begins, with brand new content. It starts in Imperial Rome, including a journey inside the newly reopened Mausoleum of Augustus.

Starting tonight, Wednesday, April 21, at 9:25 p.m. on Rai1, a new season of Ulysses, the Pleasure of Discovery, Alberto Angela’s popular television program. The new season offers the audience four episodes and a special dedicated to the environment with the participation of Piero Angela.

The first episode is dedicated to ancient Rome. It starts with the Christmas of Rome, whose foundation, according to legend, took place on April 21, 753 B.C., and continues with a journey to discover the wonders of imperial Rome, the “Rome of the Caesars,” a period when the city reached its greatest splendor. Among the surprises planned in the episode will be the Mausoleum of Augustus(read a lengthy and detailed feature on its history here), which has finally returned to the public after a long restoration work that lasted fourteen years. Precisely on the basis of the recent discoveries made by archaeologists and historians of the Capitoline superintendence, Rai 1 viewers will be able to see, through never-before-seen graphic reconstructions, the original appearance of this majestic monument that for centuries guarded the tomb of the founder of the empire. Also in the spotlight are other wonders related to Augustus, such as the Ara Pacis, one of the monuments that marks the beginning of imperial Rome, with its magnificent reliefs whose colors, thanks to the aid of graphics, will come back to life after two thousand years.

From one masterpiece to another with the splendid statues of the Torlonia Collection, one of the most important private collections of ancient statues in the world, returned to public view after seventy years with an exhibition hosted at Villa Caffarelli on the Capitoline Hill(read our review). Leaving the Augustan age behind, the program continues with other wonders built by Augustus’ successors such as the Colosseum, the largest Roman amphitheater ever built; Domitian’s Imperial Palace on the Palatine, for centuries the center of power of the empire; Trajan’s Column, the symbolic monument of Rome’s Golden Age; or the Pantheon, the most important temple of ancient Rome. Following a precise chronological order, we reconstruct the history of these world-famous monuments and the lives of the emperors who built them, famous figures such as Augustus, Titus, Trajan, and Hadrian. Then, thanks to the ingenuity of digital artist Daniel Voshart, it will be possible to see photographic portraits of the faces of Roman emperors. Through the faithful reconstruction of the images of busts and coins, in fact, a series of sketches of some of these great protagonists of History have been made. An episode that therefore promises to be very rich and is sure to please fans of the program.
