At the Ostia Antica Synagogue, the 10th edition of Arte in Memoria, art that rereads the Shoah

Here comes the 10th edition of ART IN MEMORY which, as every year, will be held at the Ostia Antica Synagogue. Inaugurated on the morning of Sunday, January 20, the exhibition will run until April 14, 2019, proposing the works of Ruth Beraha (Milan, Italy, 1986), Norbert Hinterberger (Altmünster, Austria, 1949), Zbigniew Libera (Pabianice, Poland, 1959), and Karyn Olivier (Trinidad and Tobago, 1968), which will have as their central theme the Memorial Day that coincides precisely with the first days of the event.

Specifically, Abigniew Libera presents Dove sono finiti?, a 30-meter installation (a kind of rail running along the gate), Norbert Hinterberger proposes Capitelli disseminati/vasi comunicanti, a capital near the four columns at the entrance of the Synagogue, Karyn Olivier presents the wall-board called Il silenzio è una barriera per la saggezza, while Ruth Beraha has created the negative sculpture Golia that depicts the silhouette of the giant Goliath defeated by David.

The event is curated by Adachiara Zevi who says, “This is a cultural initiative that re-proposes a dialogue between ancient and contemporary, calling artists from all over the world. Art is an indispensable tool to stem some of today’s drifts, and this exhibition has a great visual impact that evokes today’s reality. It is a dramatic exhibition, yet without being gloomy or despairing.”

ART IN MEMORY is organized by theCultural Association arteinmemoria under the patronage of the Coordinating Committee for the celebrations in remembrance of the Shoah of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, theUnion of Italian Jewish Communities and the Jewish Community of Rome and promoted by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage with the Archaeological Park of Ancient Ostia.
