Management of archaeological areas and parks: two study days in Veneto

Conference 'The management of archaeological areas and parks: comparing experiences' held in Concordia Sagittaria on April 5 and 6

On April 5 and 6, 2019, the Soprintendenza Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the Metropolitan Area of Venice and the provinces of Belluno, Padua and Treviso is organizing, at the town hall of Concordia Sagittaria (Venice), a two-day study event entitled The management of archaeological areas and parks: comparing experiences. One of the peculiarities of Italy’s cultural heritage is in fact the spread throughout the territory of equipped, visitable archaeological areas, located in the heart of cities or in suburban contexts, isolated or ideally connected to represent an ancient settlement fabric, extending from a few square meters to many hectares. Some of these areas represent the heritage preserved on view within the framework of a recognized reserve and still present underground, and are protected and enhanced through the institution of the archaeological park. Still others, which make up the majority, are small cultural institutes in their own right, and the entity in charge of them must source the continuing tension between the obligation to make them usable and the structural impossibility of managing them directly. The intent of the two days of study, organized in Concordia Sagittaria on the occasion of the inauguration of the new archaeological area in Via Faustiniana, is to compare experiences from all over Italy in order to question existing management models in the relationship between public, territorial, local community, private, association, and voluntary bodies, and to identify virtuous solutions to ensure the widest enjoyment of archaeological areas and parks.

“As Soprintedenza before and as Polo now,” says Marianna Bressan, MiBAC archaeological officer in force at the Polo Museale del Veneto and now in charge of the direction of the Museum and Archaeological Area of Altino, “we feel the need to compare experiences of management of archaeological areas ’minor’, i.e., not autonomous, partly under the competence of the Superintendencies, often close to territorial archaeological museums under the competence of Museum Poles or Municipalities, not (yet) established, with the museum of reference, in archaeological parks if not autonomous. These areas, which the ministerial territorial office of protection cannot manage due to lack of staff and (since 2015) also of enhancement skills, are entrusted to cultural associations more or less specialized, more or less identified by public selection, more or less an expression of local communities. Despite the lack of management guidelines, there are many virtuous cases and others that could learn from them. Unfortunately, there are cases where areas remain closed. This is why we are comparing ourselves in Concordia, with experts and direct witnesses of experiences from all over Italy.”

Below is the program of the two-day event.
