In Piacenza, in the Volumnia exhibition space located in the former church of Sant’Agostino in the heart of the Emilian city, an exhibition dedicated to one of Italy’s greatest designers, Michele De Lucchi, is scheduled from April 6 to June 29, 2024, entitled Michele De Lucchi. With Hands and Mind. Forty years of experimentation between art, design and architecture, curated by Paola Nicolin. This event aims to retrace Michele De Lucchi’s creative journey, exploring a broad panorama ranging from architectural structures to revolutionary design objects, including the artist’s masterpieces. Volumnia, since 2018, the year it opened, has continued to research historical design andcontemporary art with an investigation that places side-by-side design related to the world of art and the world of furniture, according to a calendar developed by gallery owner Enrica De Micheli, who started the space.

For more than four decades, Michele De Lucchi has stood out for his prolific activity in the fields of architecture, design and art installations, which challenge the limits of imagination and innovation. However, the beating heart of his inspiration lies in a more intimate approach, where craftsmanship becomes a direct expression of creative thought. For De Lucchi, shaping matter with his hands allows tangible contact with the world around him, transforming abstract idea into concrete forms of meaning and beauty.

The exhibition presents a selection of prototypes and rarities, evidence of the distinctive identity of Produzione Privata, the design workshop founded in 1990 by the artist together with Sibylle Kicherer. These unique pieces, which include furniture, lamps and furnishings, represent the culmination of a quest that defies market conventions, embracing the authenticity of craftsmanship and creative innovation.

The journey through De Lucchi’s artistic universe continues with a view of objects and works of art, the result of research initiated by the artist in 2003 and now numbering more than five hundred sculptures, mostly made of wood, the artist’s favorite material. These unique works of art testify to the unbreakable union between the exploration of new forms and the evolution of architectural concepts, offering a glimpse into De Lucchi’s creative process.

In addition, to further enrich visitors’ experience, three models of small stone architectures, masterfully created in 2007, will be exceptionally displayed. Pencil sketches, tempera drawings and etchings complement the eclectic exhibition, offering an in-depth look at the variety of techniques used by the artist to express concepts, formulate hypotheses and discover solutions.

Michele De Lucchi, an architect, has been a leading figure in the avant-garde of architecture and design since the 1970s. He is renowned for his contribution to the creation of iconic objects for some of the most prestigious companies and for creating resonant architectural projects both in Italy and abroad, ranging from industrial buildings to high-impact cultural complexes. He also holds the position of full professor at the Milan Polytechnic, where he shares his vast experience with future generations of architects and designers. His commitment to the field of architecture was recognized with the award of the honor of Officer of the Italian Republic in 2000 by President Ciampi and in 2022 with the prestigious Compasso d’Oro alla Carriera award. His works, a selection of which are exhibited in the most renowned museums in Italy and around the world, testify to his enduring influence on the contemporary architecture and design scene (his, for example, is the celebrated Tolomeo lamp). Since 2003, he has undertaken further exploratory research, devoting himself to sculpting wooden models. This practice allows him to explore the essence of architectural form while providing a valuable source of inspiration for his professional projects. In addition, he is the founder and an integral part of AMDL CIRCLE, an organization that stands for innovation and excellence in architecture and design.
