Impressions of the Orient on display at MUDEC

MUDEC in Milan is hosting from October 1, 2019 to February 2, 2020 the exhibition Impressions of the Orient. Art and Collecting between Europe and Japan

From October 1, 2019 to February 2, 2020, MUDEC - Museo delle Culture is hosting the exhibition Impressions of the Orient. Art and Collecting between Europe and Japan.

The exhibition aims to tell from an artistic, historical and ethnographic point of view the exchange relations between Japan and Europe. Thus, works from Italy and abroad will be on display, illustrating how Western artistic culture was oriented toward Japan in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, especially in France and Italy.

Visitors will have the opportunity to admire more than 170 works, including paintings, prints, decorative objects, sculptures and objects of applied art. Through these, one will get an overview of Japan’s fascination with Western culture with the resulting trade relations that took place between 1860 and 1900.

Many foreign artists were influenced by Japan: among them, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Rodin, Monet, and Toulouse-Lautrec.
In addition, the exhibition will focus on major Italian artists who were influenced by Japanism, such as Giuseppe De Nittis, Galileo Chini, Federico Zandomeneghi, and Giovanni Segantini.
