Jesi showcases 33 years of independent comics with Slovenian collective Stripburger

Jesi's Palazzo Bisaccioni opens the fifth edition of the festival dedicated to international comics with Stripburger, a Slovenian collective that has been exploring visual narratives and contemporary arts for more than 30 years, between iconoclasm and social engagement.

The city of Jesi (Ancona) is hosting, from September 19 to November 23, 2025, the fifth edition of the exhibition dedicated to international comics with the exhibition STRIPBURGER - Pioneers of independent comics | 33 years on the scene. The initiative, curated by Katerina Mirović and Alessio Trabacchini and coordinated by Roberto Gigli with project manager Mauro Tarantino, takes place in the spaces of Palazzo Bisaccioni and is organized in partnership between the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Jesi, Acca - Academy of comics, creativity and visual arts, and Stripburger, a historic comics magazine based in Slovenia. The event enjoys the patronage of the Municipality of Jesi and the Slovenian Book Agency JAK.

The exhibition presents a comprehensive overview of the 30-year activity of the Stripburger collective, a reality that has helped expand the boundaries of independent comics, connecting distant cultural worlds and creating spaces of confrontation often with an iconoclastic and punk approach. The collective’s experience has followed paths through research comics and the European underground, merging visual storytelling, performing arts, and plastic arts, and positioning itself as a point of reference in both the Slovenian and international scene. Stripburger has published such prominent authors as Lorenzo Mattotti, Anke Feuchtenberger, Peter Kuper, and Aleksandar Zograf, consolidating a bridge between the cultures of Western Europe and Central and Eastern Europe, even during the difficulties of the Yugoslav war years.

The exhibition includes original works by artists such as Andrej Štular, Matej Stupica, Kaja Avberšek, Marko Kociper, David Krančan, Tanja Komadina, Martin Ramoveš, Domen Finžgar, Gašper Rus, and Matej Kocjan, highlighting both Slovenian and international productions. The exhibition aims to restore the variety of languages and experimentations that have characterized the collective over the past thirty-three years, presenting works ranging from traditional comics to hybrid and multimedia forms, while maintaining a consistency in aesthetic and narrative research.

As in previous editions, the exhibition is accompanied by a program of collateral events that integrates educational and cultural proposals for different audiences. In the days immediately following the opening, on September 20 and 21, the Stripburger collective will be present for meetings, workshops and readings, while in the following months the exhibition will offer activities for schools, talks, screenings and workshops for children and adults in collaboration with local realities such as AccaFotografia and the Ratatà festival. The aim of the events is not limited to artistic dissemination, but also intends to stimulate social and political reflections, consistent with the collective’s history and identity.

To mark the opening, a lecture Stripburger, 33 years on the scene with Paola Bristot is scheduled for Saturday, September 20, followed by readings of poems by Srečko Kosovel by Andrej Štular, accompanied by a musical performance by Martin Ramoveš. The evening will also include a special opening of the halls of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Jesi. On Sunday, Sept. 21, there will be a workshop for children led by Andrej Štular and Martin Ramoveš, aimed at introducing youngsters to the practice of independent comics and the creative techniques developed by the collective.

The exhibition and its set of activities provide an opportunity to observe the continuity of an enduring artistic path, characterized by an internal coherence and an ability to dialogue with different cultural contexts. Stripburger stands out for its longevity and ability to combine visual experimentation and civic engagement, establishing itself as one of the main protagonists of the independent European comics scene. The Jesi review allows for an analysis of the collective’s production in all its facets, from its beginnings to the present, offering a comprehensive overview of the dynamics that have shaped research comics and contemporary artistic practices in Central and Eastern Europe.

By hosting Stripburger, the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Jesi’s proposal also confirms the city’s interest in the culture of comics and visual arts, consolidating a path of collaboration between cultural institutions and international artistic realities, and helping to spread awareness of experiences that have influenced the development of a non-mainstream but influential creative scene, emphasizing comics’ ability to serve as a medium for critical reflection and cross-cultural communication.
