The 16th century in Florence: here is the exhibition presented as "unrepeatable and unique"

The exhibition The Sixteenth Century in Florence runs from September 21, 2017 to January 21, 2018 at Palazzo Strozzi: presented as a unique and unrepeatable exhibition.

“An unrepeatable and unique event” is how the exhibition The Sixteenth Century in Florence, being held in Florence’s Palazzo Strozzi from Sept. 21, 2017 to Jan. 21, 2018, is presented. Michelangelo, Andrea del Sarto, Pontormo, Rosso Fiorentino, Bronzino, Giorgio Vasari, Benvenuto Cellini, Giambologna, Bartolomeo Ammannati, Federico Zuccari, Carlo Portelli, Jacopo Ligozzi, Santi di Tito: there are all the great protagonists of sixteenth-century Florence, in a path that, with 70 works including paintings and sculptures by 41 artists, traces a crucial century in the history of art. The exhibition, curated by Carlo Falciani and Antonio Natali, closes the trilogy of exhibitions that had begun with Bronzino in 2010 and continued with Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino in 2014.

“The exhibition,” reads the presentation, “opens new horizons on an era of great artistic proliferation, evoking in the first two rooms artists who were indispensable models of reference not only for direct students, and juxtaposing masterpieces from the 1920s. Visitors can witness never-before-seen comparisons between works-such as the not-to-be-missed one between Pontormo’s Deposition of Santa Felicita, Rosso Fiorentino’s Deposition from the Cross of Volterra, and Bronzino’s Deposed Christ from Besançon-and rediscover, among others, masterpieces such as Andrea del Sarto’s famous Pietà of Luco and Michelangelo’s River God.” An exhibition that has also enabled a major restoration campaign: seventeen works underwent interventions, thanks also to the contribution of Friends of Florence, which enabled the restoration of Pontormo’s Deposition (and the Capponi Chapel in Santa Felicita where the painting is kept), Guercino’sImmaculate Conception, Alessandro Allori’s Christ and the Adulteress and the Vision of St. Fiacre, Michelangelo’s River God and Giambologna’s Crucifix.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of lectures that will explore the themes of the exhibition and will take place inside the symbolic places of the 16th century in Florence and Tuscany: the first event is Tuesday, Oct. 10, at 5 p.m. at the church of Santa Maria Novella with a meeting on Vasari’s years in the basilica, while it will close on Saturday, Dec. 2, at 5 p.m. in Arezzo, with a meeting again on Vasari. There is also a special event on Dec. 15, a study conference on Francesco I de’ Medici at the Altana of Palazzo Strozzi. Educational activities for children, adults and families are also planned. Events also include the restoration of works narrated directly by restorers: starting on Thursday 26 at 9 p.m. with Muriel Vervat narrating Bronzino’sImmaculate Conception.

The focal point of the exhibition will be the second room, which features side-by-side the three immense masterpieces by Pontormo, Rosso Fiorentino and Bronzino: the Deposition of Santa Felicita (1525-1528), the Deposition from the Cross of Volterra (1521) and the Deposition of Christ of Besançon (circa 1543-1545). The exhibition will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Open from 9 a.m. by reservation only. The ticket office closes one hour before closing time. Tickets: full 12 euros, reduced 9.50 euros, reduced for schools 4 euros.
