Ferrara, tender for cafeteria and kiosk in Palazzo Massari complex kicks off

The Municipality of Ferrara opens the tender to entrust a cafeteria-bistro and a kiosk-bar inside the Palazzo Massari-Palazzina Cavalieri di Malta complex. New services will accompany the reopening of the cultural center closed since the 2012 earthquake.

In Ferrara , the path of recovery and enhancement of the monumental complex of Palazzo Massari and the Palazzina Cavalieri di Malta continues . In view of the reopening of the cultural center, the City Council has in fact launched the public bidding process for the assignment in concession of the spaces intended for reception and refreshment services, with the aim of expanding the offer available to citizens, visitors and tourists and strengthening the link between the museum complex and the nearby Massari Park. The initiative represents a further piece of the larger redevelopment project that is affecting one of the symbolic places of the Este city, which remained closed following the damage caused by the 2012 earthquake.

The new concession concerns the opening of a cafeteria-bistro inside the museum complex and a kiosk-bar located in the area adjacent to the park, with the aim of making the future cultural center increasingly attractive and usable throughout the year. In fact, the city administration considers the new services to be an integral part of the strategy to relaunch the “Palazzo Massari - Palazzina Cavalieri di Malta” complex, which is set to become fully accessible again in the coming months after a long and articulated architectural and functional renovation.

“With this new step,” says the mayor of Ferrara, Alan Fabbri, “the path of rebirth of one of the places of our city, unfortunately closed since the earthquake of 2012, continues, but in a few months it will finally see the light again. The Palazzo Massari - Palazzina Cavalieri di Malta complex will once again become a living space, open and welcoming, capable of offering services and opportunities for meetings. We are returning an extraordinary heritage to the people of Ferrara, enhancing it while respecting its identity and making it increasingly attractive in terms of culture and tourism, in line with the vision of a Ferrara that invests in the quality and full usability of public spaces.”

“The new concession,” stresses Municipal Councillor for Heritage Cristina Coletti, “will make it possible to enrich the offer of services within a monumental context of great historical value. The goal is to promote sociality and permanence within the museum center and Massari Park, making available to families and tourists modern spaces, capable of living throughout the year and of integrating with the path of architectural renaissance that is affecting the entire complex, while respecting the history of the property.”

The tender specifically concerns premises located in Corso Porta Mare at numbers 5, 7 and 9, within the monumental complex, as well as a building located near the park. The spaces will be entrusted to a single concessionaire who will be responsible for managing both the cafeteria-bistrot and the kiosk-bar, creating an integrated offer intended to serve different but complementary audiences. The cafeteria-bistro will be located within the museum complex and will have a total area of about 102 square meters. The spaces include an area intended for serving, a space dedicated to food preparation and service rooms for staff. Completing the facility will also be an outdoor dehor of about 45 square meters, designed to expand the accommodation capacity and provide an additional opportunity for visitors to stop by.

Alongside this space, the concessionaire will also operate the kiosk-bar located along the border between Massari Park and the museum complex. The facility has about 58 square meters of covered space and an outdoor expanse of about 80 square meters, designed to accommodate visitors to the park, play area and surrounding walking paths. The intervention aims to create continuity between the museum and the park, two realities that are closely related but traditionally experienced separately. In fact, the presence of an integrated system of refreshment services aims to encourage greater interaction between cultural activities and green spaces, helping to transform the entire area into a reference point for leisure and urban sociality.

Among the most significant aspects of the project is the shared management of some environments between the commercial activity and the museum complex. In fact, an accessible toilet and two passage halls will be used in common, which will perform a connecting function between the different environments and provide access to the exhibition routes. The configuration of the spaces has been designed to ensure the correct balance between the needs of the museum and those of the catering activities, while ensuring full accessibility for visitors.

One of the main strengths identified by the administration concerns the strategic location of the cafeteria within the visitor route. In fact, the cafeteria will be located in close proximity to the ticket office, bookshop and lecture halls, placing it in an area of high traffic and high attendance. Added to this is an element considered particularly important for the economic sustainability of the activity: complete functional autonomy with respect to the museum’s opening hours. In fact, the cafeteria will be accessible both from the inner courtyard of the complex and directly from Corso Porta Mare, and will allow independent use as well as guarantee the possibility of operating beyond the visiting hours of the collections. This feature will allow the facility to address not only visitors to the museum, but also residents of the neighborhood, frequent visitors to Massari Park and those who pass through the area on a daily basis. The goal is to create a meeting place capable of living independently throughout the year and contributing to the vitality of one of the most significant areas of the city.
