Vittoriale degli Italiani: restoration and renovation work completed at the Mausoleum and Auditorium

The reopening of the Mausoleum, after a major complete restoration, and the inauguration of the entirely renovated Auditorium mark a significant stage in the recovery and enhancement of the Vittoriale degli Italiani.

Over the weekend, a particularly significant moment for the Foundation took place at the Vittoriale degli Italiani: the reopening of the Mausoleum, returned to the public after a major complete restoration, and the inauguration of the entirely renovatedAuditorium. These two events mark a new stage in the path of recovery and enhancement of the monumental complex, concretely expressing the cultural project promoted and guided by President Giordano Bruno Guerri. In fact, the interventions are part of a broader strategy that aims to strengthen the role of the Vittoriale as a living and open place, capable of combining heritage protection, innovation and cultural planning, in order to give back to the public a new perspective on Gabriele D’Annunzio’s legacy, keeping the historical dimension alive but projecting it into the future.

The restoration of the Mausoleum

The Mausoleum, located at the highest point of the Monumental Park and designed by architect Gian Carlo Maroni, represents the symbolic heart of the Vittoriale. This celebratory architecture encapsulates the D’Annunzian idea of memory, work and heroism.

The restoration included the cleaning and consolidation of the stone surfaces, as well as the implementation of a new LED lighting system with low thermal impact, developed through collaboration with A2A. The new lighting system was designed to enhance the plasticity of the architecture and to return the Mausoleum to its role as the highlight of the route within the Park, making it fully accessible even in the evening hours.

The completely renovated Auditorium

Alongside the reopening of the Mausoleum, the completely renovatedAuditorium was also unveiled, an intervention designed to strengthen the Vittoriale’s role as a cultural space dedicated to meetings, performances and events.

The architectural design, signed by Angelo Bucarelli, dialogues with installations by Ugo Riva. The installation includes three-dimensional panels with ceramic and gilded aluminum birds, a clear symbolic reference to the famous flight over Vienna made in 1918. Also suspended within the space is the SVA aircraft, restored for the occasion, which reinforces the link between the Vittoriale’s identity and the memory of D’Annunzio’s aviation feat.
