Florence Academy of Fine Arts' first virtual open day gets underway: online orientation kicks off

Florence Academy of Fine Arts' first online Open Day takes place May 14 and 15: online orientation for hundreds of students.

On May 14 and 15, theAccademia di Belle Arti in Florence is launching its first online Open Day: two days of orientation for prospective students. The Open Day is now a regular annual event on the part of the Florentine institute, which attracts hundreds of students from all over Italy each year (there were about 400 in 2019) to its historic headquarters on Via Ricasoli.

OnThursday, May 14, the three-year courses will be presented: one per hour with the coordinators, tutors and a group of students to illustrate their peculiarities and disciplines being studied (between courses there will also be time to learn about the services provided by the Regional Company for the Right to Study, which will intervene a with one of its representatives). On Friday, May 15, however, it will be the turn of the two-year courses, international mobility opportunities reserved for members, such as the Erasmus project, and the Free School of the Nude: a historic institute dedicated to the anatomical study and drawing of the human figure from life, which saw Giovanni Fattori among its masters and Amedeo Modigliani among its students. To participate in the appointments you will need to register on the Zoom platform (at the moment there are already more than 470 registrations) or connect on the Academy’s youtube channel. The full program and registration links are available on the dedicated website.

Theeducational offerings of the Florence Academy of Fine Arts (which has about 1,500 students, 40 percent of whom come from other countries, with China leading the way) are part of the university-level higher education system (Miur/Afam). It offers Level I and II courses, Master’s degrees and courses in drawing the human figure from life that flow into the Free School of the Nude. The courses (I and II level, masters) award degrees equivalent to university degrees, while the Free School of the Nude issues a certificate of attendance. Three-year Level I courses include Painting, Sculpture, Decoration, Scenography, Museum Education, Design and Art Graphics. Level II course offerings (two-year duration), on the other hand, are divided into: New Languages of Expression, Painting Methodologies, Plastic Design for Theater Set Design, Exhibition Space Design, Art Curatorship and Illustration. The first-level master’s degree programs, which are held in collaboration with major institutions in the area, active for the coming academic year are: Textile - art fabric creation, Ceramic Product Design, Design for Crafts and Filming Art.

“We strongly wanted this appointment,” explains the director of the Academy, Claudio Rocca, “because we want to show that although at a distance, the Academy is there, it is present and it is a choice that should certainly be taken into consideration for young people who are about to finish their studies, as well as for those who will continue their academic career. Of course, showing through a webcam the peculiarities of an institution with a purely laboratory vocation is not easy, and we will rely in this on our faculty and the experience of our students, who have already been fully involved in orientation activities for a few years now. Above all, we want these two days to become an opportunity for aspiring students to come close and welcome them as if we were still in our classrooms.”
