A memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Culture - Regional Directorate National Museums Liguria, the University of Genoa and the Musée de Préhistoire Régionale de Menton - Municipality of Menton, France, was signed today in Genoa at the headquarters of the National Museums of Genoa - Palazzo Reale. The agreement institutionalizes an already established scientific and cultural collaboration focused on the enhancement of the Balzi Rossi prehistoric site.
The agreement involves in particular the Balzi Rossi Prehistoric Museum (Ventimiglia) and the area of the adjacent caves, the Department of Informatics, Bioengineering, Robotics and Systems Engineering (DIBRIS) of theUniversity of Genoa , and the Musée de Préhistoire Régionale of Menton, which preserves a relevant part of the historical collections from the Balzi Rossi. The cooperation also involves the ADE MEDITERRANEE center, which is currently engaged in non-invasive surveys of the site, particularly in the submerged area in front of the caves, under a research concession from the Ministry of Culture.
The main purpose of the protocol is to consolidate the methods of scientific and cultural collaboration between the institutions, with a specific focus on the creation of topographical documentation of the entire site, both for the emerged part and the part currently submerged by the sea. The most innovative element of the agreement is the creation of a 3-D reconstruction of the paleoenvironment that will allow for an integrated representation of the complexity of the archaeological and naturalistic context of Balzi Rossi. The reconstruction will be accessible to both museums involved and will serve as a tool for sharing scientific and cultural information with the public, strengthening relations between Italian and French institutions and creating a network of exchange based on shared and updated data.
The agreement also formalizes pre-existing collaborations, starting with the cooperation between UNIGE-DIBRIS and the Balzi Rossi Museum, which led to the census and mapping of rock engravings on the walls of the site’s caves. In parallel, the collaboration between the two Italian and French museums enabled the reconstruction and presentation of the stratigraphic sequences of archaeological materials and faunas found in Barma Grande Cave.
