British sculptor Martin Jennings will create the new statue of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, which will form the centerpiece of the national memorial dedicated to the sovereign in the United Kingdom. The work will be located in St James’s Park, at the entrance to Marlborough Gate, and will be designed in collaboration with the Foster + Partners team. Final design proposals will be submitted next year for approval by His Majesty the King and the Prime Minister.
Jennings, among Britain’s most highly regarded sculptors, is already known for creating the bust of the Queen Mother in St. Paul’s Cathedral and the first crowned portrait on coinage of King Charles III. The artist was chosen on the recommendation of Foster + Partners, in consultation with the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee. The goal is to create a lasting national monument commemorating the longest-serving monarch in British history.
“On behalf of the Committee, I am delighted to have chosen Martin Jennings to create the sculpture of Queen Elizabeth,” said committee chair Robin Janvrin. “We felt he had a deep understanding of the significance of this unique commission, and we were impressed with Martin’s previous work and his ability to capture the essence of character in public artworks. We look forward to working with Martin and the Foster + Partners team in the coming months.”
Norman Foster, founder and executive chairman of Foster + Partners, added, “I am delighted to welcome Martin Jennings to the Queen Elizabeth Memorial team. His work is characterized by a sensitivity and humanity that fit well with the fundamental spirit of the project, and I look forward to working with Martin and the rest of the team in the coming months.”
Martin Jennings himself commented enthusiastically on the appointment, “I am delighted to have been invited to create the sculpture of Queen Elizabeth. She was loved and admired around the world for her unwavering dedication to duty, carried out with grace, decorum and restraint. The monument should not only reflect the grandeur of the place where it stands, but also be an object of delight for its countless visitors in the years to come. I look forward to working with Foster + Partners and the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee to achieve this goal together.”
The decision to entrust the sculpture to Jennings follows the previous choice to place the memorial in St. James’s Park, a site closely associated with royal tradition and Queen Elizabeth II herself. In the coming months, the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee will work jointly with Martin Jennings and Foster + Partners to finalize the design.
