The restoration of an important work by Lorenzo Lotto (Venice, 1480 - Loreto, c. 1556) preserved at the Pontifical Museum of Loreto begins: the St. Michael driving out Lucifer. The Pontifical Delegation for the Holy House of Loreto has in fact announced that, after an initial reconnaissance necessary to define a definitive plan of intervention, restoration of the painting will begin at the museum on Oct. 26. The intervention, which will be the work of Bergamo-based restorer Alberto Sangalli, after being approved by the Soprintendenza Archeologia - Beni Ambientali - Belle Arti e Paesaggio delle Marche, will be shared in all its steps with the Vatican Museums’ Restoration Laboratory.
“With the intervention to restore the original beauty of such an important Lotto painting, the path of enhancement and revitalization of the Pontifical Museum continues,” says Monsignor Fabio Dal Cin, Archbishop Pontifical Delegate for the Holy House of Loreto. “With the occasion, an innovative and digital way of enjoying the restoration will also be proposed,” he added, “so that anyone who wishes to do so, in presence in the Museum or remotely, can be moved by the beauty and the art of knowing how to preserve or restore it. An art, that of restoration, which is much needed in a country like ours, so rich in works that need prevention, maintenance and continuous rediscovery.”
The possibility of following “remotely” the various phases of the restoration will be guaranteed by theMarche Polytechnic University, which will take care of arranging live streaming properly announced through the Lauretan Sanctuary’s social channels and the Pontifical Museum’s website(www.museopontificioloreto.it).
As part of a larger project that will also involve other works by Lorenzo Lotto, the University’s Distori Heritage research group will be responsible for digitizing the work pre- and post-restoration. The digital copy of the work will then be layered with different levels of investigation and depth, which will allow an innovative virtual fruition, going to compose a fundamental database for its preservation.
