Venice, Fabrizio Plessi's digital set designs in an installation designed for the Magazzino del Sale


Until April 3, 2022, the Magazzino del Sale in Venice is hosting the exhibition "Fabrizio Plessi-Trilogy. A visionary journey in the theatrical art of Fabrizio Plessi and Frédéric Flamand" dedicated to the artist's work in the field of scenography.

It opened on March 5 in Venice, at Magazzino del Sale 3 at Zattere, and will remain open to the public until April 3, 2022, the exhibition Fabrizio Plessi-Trilogy. A visionary journey through the theatrical art of Fabrizio Plessi and Frédéric Flamand. Conceived by School of Scenography and Scenotechnics faculty members Lorenzo Cutuli and Nicola Bruschi, the exhibition intends to focus on Plessi’s work in the field of scenography with an installation designed specifically for the spaces of the Magazzino del Sale and produced by the Academy’s Schools of Scenography-Scenotechnics and New Technologies of Art, based on the artist’s concept and design drawings. It is intended to be a tribute by theVenice Academy of Fine Arts to the video art artist who was a student and later a teacher of painting at the Academy. After his Venetian experience, for fifteen years Plessi was professor of Humanization of Technologies at the Kunsthochschule für Medien in Cologne and holder of the chair of Electronic Scenography at the same institution.

Trilogy includes three large video projections that recall the form of an open digital book, dedicated to theatrical productions conceived by Plessi in collaboration with Belgian director, actor and choreographer Frédéric Flamand: The Fall of Icarus (1989), Titanic (1992), Ex-Machina (1994). Closing the exhibition is a fourth large video projection that brings together video sequences from the Trilogy.

"The Fall of Icarus, Titanic and Ex-Machina represent," writes Marco Tonelli, who from June will curate an extensive exhibition on all the artist’s theatrical work, of which Trilogy will be also part of Trilogy, at the Museum of Palazzo Collicola in Spoleto on the occasion of the Festival dei Due Mondi, "the summa of Plessi’s research in the field of digital scenography, in which the use of monitors, projections, electronic waterfalls, even simple household appliances such as refrigerators or fans or improvised satellite dishes, together with poor materials and references to the history of art, will constitute a sort of primary and existential archeology, despite their accentuated technological and futuristic character."

“The underlying motivation that runs through the entire exhibition, which saw teachers from the School of Scenography and the School of New Technologies of the Arts working with the artist from the earliest stages, is a didactic principle,” says Academy Director Riccardo Caldura. “The subject of the exhibition are the conception materials of these three works for theater and dance, along with the documentation of their staging. Walking through the space of the exhibition, one browses through the ideational layers of a work along with its completed restitution, its final mise-en-scène, without there being a before or after: conception and realization coexist in the artist’s book.”

The exhibition at Warehouse 3 is complemented by another tribute to Plessi set up in the Artistic Anatomy Room that highlights the relationship between the artist’s studio and training. For the first time, some rare studies and drawings by Plessi, preserved in the archives of the institution’s historical fund, are on public display.
