Museo Galileo and National Roman Museum sign three-year collaboration agreement

The two Roman institutions signed a three-year memorandum of understanding to promote research, educational activities, exhibitions and conferences, with the aim of enhancing cultural heritage and strengthening the relationship between antiquity, science, technology and art.

Museo Galileo and the Museo Nazionale Romano announced the signing of a collaboration protocol on Feb. 13, 2026, valid for three years with the possibility of renewal. The agreement is in the spirit of building a national museum system and aims to strengthen relations between antiquity, science, technology and art through joint research, study, educational and outreach activities. According to the protocol, both institutions undertake to promote studies of their own collections and the collections of other museums, carrying out initiatives aimed at bringing the general public closer to cultural heritage. Among the planned activities are training courses, conferences, temporary exhibitions and other public initiatives. The stated goal is to make the collections of the two museums accessible and understandable to the public, enhancing their historical-scientific and artistic contents.

“It is with great pleasure that Museo Galileo launches this extensive program of scientific and institutional collaboration with the Museo Nazionale Romano,” says Roberto Ferrari, executive director of Museo Galileo. “We are happy to continue our commitment alongside national museums to deepen and expose the decisive contribution made by protagonists, ideas and inventions of the ancient world to the history of science. It is starting from common knowledge projects that we can give an increasingly ambitious shape to the National Museum System, and organize initiatives and services aimed at the scientific community and the general public. I am very happy to sign this agreement with Director Federica Rinaldi just a few months after she took office at the helm of the National Roman Museum, continuing the collaboration started at the time of her commitment to the Colosseum Archaeological Park.”

“The National Roman Museum is pleased to announce the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Museo Galileo aimed at the realization of joint research and enhancement activities,” says Federica Rinaldi, director of the National Roman Museum. “The agreement stems from the shared desire to bring into dialogue the skills, collections and professionalism of the two institutions, with the aim of offering the public innovative and scientifically rigorous exhibition itineraries, capable of narrating the archaeological and historical-scientific heritage through new keys to interpretation. Special attention will be paid to the design of exhibitions, installations and educational apparatus that illustrate the development of scientific knowledge and technical applications in antiquity, highlighting their legacy in European thought and culture. The collaboration represents a significant step toward an integrated enhancement of cultural heritage, in the belief that the dialogue between archaeology and the history of science can contribute to a broader understanding of the roots of modernity.”

Among the first planned initiatives is an exhibition dedicated to The Obelisks from Antiquity to the Renaissance, designed to explore the historical and symbolic significance of the monuments and their connection to science and art. In addition, an exhibition project on the forms of scientific and technical knowledge in the Roman world is being developed, which will leverage the archaeological finds of the National Roman Museum and may serve as the basis for a future permanent hall in the museum itself. The protocol also includes the development of a thematic exhibition on Magic, Astrology and Science in the Roman World.
