Seismic safety, MiC funds Carditello Royal Site with more than 12 million

Launched the Grand Project "Carditello" under the National Culture Program 2021-2027: restoration, structural consolidation and landscape rehabilitation for the Bourbon Palace, at the center of national protection and enhancement policies.

The Ministry of Culture has launched the implementation of the Grand Project “Carditello,” allocating total funding of 12,458,491.86 euros to the Royal Site of Carditello, the important Bourbon palace. The intervention is part of the broader MiC program dedicated to the seismic safety of cultural places and includes a structured set of restoration, structural consolidation, landscape and environmental recovery actions, with the aim of strengthening the preservation and enjoyment of the Royal Delight in the medium and long term.

The funding represents a decisive step for one of the most significant monumental complexes of the historical-artistic heritage of Southern Italy, which has already been at the center of a path of recovery and revitalization in recent years. With the Grand Project “Carditello,” the Ministry of Culture is intervening in a structured way on a site that combines architectural, landscape and symbolic value, including it fully in the national strategies of risk prevention and adaptation to new environmental challenges.

The intervention on Carditello is part of a broader program promoted by the Ministry of Culture to prevent and secure cultural sites from seismic risk, flanked by specific climate change adaptation actions. The reference framework is that of the National Culture Program 2021-2027, and in particular Action 2.4.1, the strategic planning tool co-financed by European funds, designed to strengthen the protection, enhancement and enjoyment of Italy’s cultural heritage in areas most exposed to economic and social fragility. Overall, through the Ministry of Culture initiative, 21 nationwide projects will be financed for a total amount of 100,562,383.04 euros. The funded interventions will allow to act on a total volume of about 450 thousand cubic meters of cultural structures. The combined action of restoration and consolidation will significantly improve the seismic behavior of the affected buildings, reducing the risk of damage resulting not only from seismic events, but more generally from extreme natural phenomena. In fact, the program provides an integrated view of safety, taking into account the different stresses to which the cultural heritage is exposed.

Alongside structural safety interventions, the program’s lines of action include the installation of 355 monitoring, warning and response devices. These are advanced technological systems designed to prevent and promptly detect the effects of a seismic event on the monitored structures. These devices will enable the acquisition of real-time data on building behavior, improving emergency response and management capacity and contributing to more informed and planned maintenance of heritage assets.

Thanks to these integrated actions, the Ministry of Culture estimates an average increase of 2.5 seismic risk classes for the buildings affected by the interventions. A result that will have positive repercussions both on the long-term preservation of cultural heritage and on the safety of the people who visit them on a daily basis. Reducing structural vulnerability is in fact a key element in ensuring the sustainability of cultural and tourist enjoyment, especially in territories characterized by greater exposure to natural hazards.

The interventions planned for Carditello are not limited to structural consolidation, but also include landscape and environmental restoration of the complex, recognizing the unitary value of the site and its relationship with the territorial context. Indeed, the enhancement of the Royal Delight passes through an integrated vision that holds together architecture, landscape, history and contemporary use of spaces.

Funding earmarked for the Grand “Carditello” project was arranged through specific decrees of admission by the Ministry of Culture, adopted during 2025. These decrees implement Specific Objective RSO2.4 of the National Culture Program 2021-2027, which aims to reduce the risks associated with natural disasters and strengthen the adaptive capacity of Italy’s cultural heritage. An objective that takes on a particularly relevant value in a country characterized by widespread seismic vulnerability and a unique historical and artistic heritage.

With the launch of the Great “Carditello” project, the Royal Site is thus consolidated as one of the reference points of the Ministry of Culture’s national policies. The investment of more than 12 million euros testifies to the desire to continue decisively along the path of recovery and enhancement of the Reggia, restoring it to a central role not only from a cultural and touristic point of view, but also as a symbol of a public strategy oriented toward prevention, security and sustainability of the cultural heritage.

“An important funding,” says Maurizio Maddaloni, president of the Fondazione Real Site of Carditello, “that will allow us to mitigate seismic risks and adapt to continuous climate change, while protecting the Bourbon Palace over time and guaranteeing full enjoyment for visitors. An intervention that confirms, once again, the status of Carditello and the credibility acquired thanks to the many strategic enhancement actions undertaken by our governance and the ability to attract significant resources. Long gone, now, are the years of malfeasance and degradation: our attentions are constantly focused on recovering the built heritage, which we inherited in conditions that are dangerous for its safety and for its very preservation. Carditello is the paradigm of a territory and a population that has definitely raised its head.”
