The Museo Novecento presents its upcoming exhibitions. After nearly 50 years, Henry Moore returns

The Museo Novecento presents its new exhibition season. After nearly 50 years, British artist Henry Moore returns to Florence.

The Museo Novecento presents its new exhibition season: from September to December 2020 there will be many events for a rich program of exhibitions.

It starts on September 25 with the opening to the public of four temporary exhibitions: Humus by Andrea Francolino (until December 12, 2020), Incanto by Rocco Gurrieri and Irene Montini (until January 28, 2021), Paradigma. The Architect’s Table (through January 28, 2021) and Made in Italy - OFF. Suspense by Lori Lako (through November 23, 2020).

Andrea Francolino’sHumus, curated by Luca Puri and Sergio Risaliti, will occupy the second floor, under the loggia, and will see twenty-eight flags installed, one for each state of the European Union plus that of the Union in a sort of large “global” flag that can be adopted by individual countries under the banner of protection for the environment. On each flag will be visible gps coordinates referring to the locations of individual parliaments, a way of revealing, through geographic location, one’s place in the world. The anthems of the twenty-seven nations and that of the European Union will echo in the loggia.

On the occasion of the exhibition Incanto, curated by Sergio Risaliti and Luca Puri, the two young photographers, illustrators and videomakers Irene Montini and Rocco Gurrieri will exhibit their work in a museum for the first time. Incanto intends to be a journey through a dreamlike, supernatural and gloomy universe. The exhibition project grew out of an unpublished film produced by the museum: the two artists have drawn from the film’s settings a series of large-format photographs, which will be exhibited in the spaces on the first and second floors of the former Leopoldine complex. A black fairy tale in which the main set becomes a place of shadow and passage between fantastic and diabolical worlds, a cinematographic and visual experiment articulated between photographs, films and a room dedicated to the exhibition of a sculpture in the shape of a “plant,” as miraculous as it is evil, the central pivot of the narrative of this mysterious affair.

Paradigm. The architect’s table, an exhibition cycle curated by Laura Andreini, which on a four-monthly basis has seen a succession of works by many great designers of the international scene in the ground floor rooms of the Museo Novecento. During the lockdown, Paradigma moved to the digital platforms of the museum and the trade magazine Area, involving numerous professional studios, which architect Laura Andreini asked to create a video on the theme, “What is the architect’s table?” The videos, broadcast on a regular basis during the lockdown on the museum’s official channels, will be part of the exhibition to reveal the peculiar dimension of the architect’s activity.

Finally, Suspence, curated by the museum director, is part of the periodic Made In Italy - OFF project. For the first time, the project expands the boundaries of Italian art and hosts the work of artist Lori Lako (Pogradec, 1991), who has been active in Italy for many years. A large wall (12×3.50 meters) painted in the colors of the Italian flag hosts the work of this artist who brings to the Novecento Museum her site-specific work: a reflection on the environment and the exploitation of resources that starts from her country of origin and reaches Europe and the entire planet.

Scheduled for October is the solo exhibition of African American artist McArthur Binion, entitled Duel. McArthur Binion, during which his work will be exhibited for the first time in an Italian cultural institution. On October 10 and 11, the first edition of the festival dedicated to the performing arts MATCH will also be held between the Museo Novecento and the Sala d’Arme of Palazzo Vecchio. Two Days on Performance / Public / Space, which aims to pay homage to Allan Kaprow.

On the other hand, Henry Moore ’s big return to Florence will be held in November, almost fifty years after his famous exhibition at Forte Belvedere. The second floor of the Museo Novecento and the Room environment on the ground floor will host drawings, graphics and sculptures by the British artist.

“To have come after two years to create a scientific collaboration with the prestigious Henry Moore Foundation to bring the master’s works back to Florence fifty years after the epochal exhibition at Forte di Belvedere,” stressed Museo Novecento artistic director Sergio Risaliti, “is a source of pride and immense satisfaction. The exhibition organized for November is meant to be a gift to the city that has suffered a dramatic crisis and is coming out of this difficult situation with difficulty but with courage and pride.”

On the occasion of the International Day of Violence Against Women, Nov. 25, artist Marinella Senatore will create a site-specific work for the museum’s loggia and The Wall and will be featured in a talk about her work and its relationship to the themes of the day.

2020 will conclude with Solo. Arturo Martini, a retrospective dedicated to one of the great protagonists of twentieth-century art, starting with works from the museum’s permanent collection.
