Italian President Sergio Mattarella today visited the major exhibition Beato Angelico, staged in the spaces of Palazzo Strozzi in the heart of Florence. The exhibition, the result of a collaboration between the Palazzo Strozzi Foundation, the Ministry of Culture - Regional Directorate National Museums Tuscany and the Museum of San Marco, is one of the most eagerly awaited exhibitions of the year, dedicated to one of the absolute protagonists of the Renaissance and Italian art of all time(here is our review).
The Head of State’s arrival at Palazzo Strozzi took on the value of official recognition for a project that has taken years to complete, combining scientific research, restoration and exceptional loans from some of the world’s most important museum collections. The President took a guided tour through the rooms of the exhibition in the company of the exhibition’s curators, Carl Brandon Strehlke, Curator Emeritus of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Stefano Casciu, Regional Director of the National Museums of Tuscany, who explained to him the contents and new features of the exhibition.
During the visit, President Mattarella was accompanied by Luigi De Siervo, President of the Palazzo Strozzi Foundation, Arturo Galansino, Director General of the Foundation, Sara Funaro, Mayor of Florence, and Eugenio Giani, President of the Region of Tuscany. After walking through the rooms dedicated to the masterpieces of the Dominican painter, the Head of State greeted the members of the Strozzi Foundation’s Board of Directors and the personalities involved in the organization and realization of the exhibition.
According to director Arturo Galansino, Mattarella “showed himself deeply interested in the exhibition, I would say almost ecstatic in front of the extraordinary works of Angelico.” The Head of State, Galansino added, “particularly appreciated the reconstruction of the great altarpieces, the important restoration campaign and the unprecedented opportunity to see together exceptional loans from the most important national and international collections.”
The exhibition, curated by Carl Brandon Strehlke and Stefano Casciu, is indeed a highly significant event in the international museum scene. For the first time, some of Beato Angelico’s most celebrated works-many of which have never been exhibited together-are brought together in an itinerary that traces the artist’s career, from his Fiesole training to his great masterpieces for Medici Florence.
Casciu himself recounted how the president lingered at length in front of these works, showing particular curiosity about the technical and material aspects of Angelic painting. “The works that most interested Mattarella,” he said, “were the St. Mark’s Altarpiece, for the technical issues related to the use of gold and the rendering of details such as the gilded draperies, and the Armadio degli argenti, a masterpiece that demonstrates Beato Angelico’s extraordinary storytelling ability.” The president then continued on to other engagements in the city."
