Three appointments to discover the lesser-known areas of Florence

Three appointments to discover the lesser-known areas of Florence's historic center and to deepen knowledge of the city, urban fabric and landscape areas. These are the Heritage Walks, aimed at young people and adults and free of charge.

On December 17, 1982, the Historic Center of Florence was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. On the occasion of this anniversary, the Florence World Heritage and UNESCO Relations Office of the City of Florence and MUS.E organized walks (Jan. 5-6-7) conceived through the Florence Continuous Form project, with the intention of spreading the history of the city of Florence and fostering connections between the area, people and heritage. Developed with the support of the Heritage and Research Laboratory (HeRe Lab, a joint laboratory between the City of Florence and the University of Florence), the goals of the Firenze Forma Continua project are for the community to reappropriate the fabric of the city and transmit its values to future generations.

Heritage Walks, this is the title of the initiative, will take participants to discover the lesser-known areas of the historic center, architectures, glimpses and stories of Florence and deepen their knowledge of the city, urban fabric and landscape areas.

The Historic Center of Florence was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List because it is a “unique achievement, a masterpiece of work, the result of continuous creation that has continued for more than six centuries,” but knowledge of it is often limited to the main monuments and the most known, thus failing to grasp the complex fabric of places, relationships and activities that is still ideally enclosed by the city walls, among the most significant elements for understanding the historical evolution of the city.

It is with this in mind that three distinct heritage itineraries have been developed, centered on neuralgic areas of Florence’s history and life: the route to the north of the city, around Porta San Gallo “New Traces of Ancient Relations”; the one to the south, along the Oltrarno walls “Rethinking the Margin”; and the one around San Miniato al Monte.

The walks are for young people and adults; they are free and last two hours. They are suspended in case of rain.
