After half a century of operation, New York ’s Spur Westwater Gallery is preparing to close for good on December 31, 2025. The last exhibition hosted will be the one currently dedicated to British sculptor Richard Long, which can be visited until Dec. 13, 2025.
“After 50 successful years, Spur Westwater Gallery will close on Dec. 31 as co-founders Angela Westwater and Gian Enzo Sperone have decided to pursue new individual paths,” the gallery said in a statement. “We thank everyone who has contributed to the Gallery’s success and achievements.”
The gallery, originally named Sperone Westwater Fischer, was born in 1975 when Italian gallery owner Gian Enzo Sperone, Angela Westwater and German art dealer Konrad Fischer opened an initial space at 142 Greene Street in the SoHo neighborhood. In 1982 the current name was adopted, and in the following years a second location opened at 121 Greene Street. From the beginning, the exhibition program combined the European avant-garde with a stable group of American artists particularly supported by the founders.
Notable early exhibitions included the 1977 exhibition devoted to minimalist works by Carl Andre, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, and Sol LeWitt; seven of Bruce Nauman’s most significant shows; eleven exhibitions by Richard Long; and in 1979 the installation of one of Mario Merz’s famous glass and neon igloos, evidence of his ongoing commitment to Arte Povera artists, including Alighiero Boetti. Important historical group shows were also held in the Greene Street space, such as Early Conceptual Works in 1989, featuring works by Robert Barry, Alighiero Boetti, Daniel Buren, Douglas Huebler, Joseph Kosuth, Giulio Paolini and Lawrence Weiner, and the 1999 exhibition Gold: Gothic Masters and Lucio Fontana, as well as a selection of works by Piero Manzoni. From 2002 to 2010, the gallery moved to 415 West 13th Street, in a 940-square-foot space in the Meatpacking District.
In September 2010, Sperone Westwater opened a new building designed by Foster + Partners at 257 Bowery, also in New York City. In 2012, the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) awarded the structure the International Award for Architectural Excellence.
