Music-archaeology in the Archaeological Park of Paestum

In July, the Paestum Archaeological Park is offering an educational music-archaeology project to tell the story of the Greek temples.

A new educational project of the Paestum Archaeological Park to tell the story of Greek temples through music-archaeology.

The initiative will take place in July and is a collaboration with the Synaulia association and will be led by archaeo-musician Walter Maioli.

The particular project is inspired by the enjoyment of archaeological sites in Northern Europe, in which re-enactments and performances are introduced into the public’s daily visits.
There is a difference, however: the presence of “a red thread, namely the music of the ancients, and a cultural scientific project that guarantees a high level of content,” specified the director of the Paestum Archaeological Park, Gabriel Zuchtriegel.
He added, “From now on, all visitors will be able to approach the history of Paestum through the theme of music, which is transversal: sacrifices and rituals, feasts, banquets, recitations, funerals, even gladiator fights and battles were carried out to the sound of the lyre, flutes, timpani and so on... music is a universal language with which we aim to communicate Paestum’s archaeological heritage to diverse audiences, from children to adults and people with mental disabilities, such as autism... in short, we do education with and for all the senses.”

The program of daily activities (excluding Mondays) includes interactive performances and workshops for children and adults, as well as “music therapy” sessions; the children’s workshop is scheduled at 12 noon.
