Florence is preparing to host the fourth installment of Spotlight Design, Pandolfini ’s auction dedicated to excellence in 20th-century design and decorative arts, scheduled for Feb. 25. Following the debut of the auction cycle inaugurated in 2023, the event confirms its focus on high quality and rare lots, featuring works by prominent Italian and international designers such as Les Lalanne, Ingo Maurer, Lapo Binazzi, Ettore Sottsass and Gio Ponti.
Among the most anticipated pieces is the Pigeon model table lamp by François-Xavier Lalanne, made of bronze, copper, and glass, estimated at between 15,000 and 20,000 euros. The Pigeon model represents one of the most recognizable examples of the Lalanne’s creative language, characterized by a balance of irony, elegance and craftsmanship perfection. The French duo’s works have marked the history of surrealist design, entering major international collections, and today are among the most sought-after by collectors. The Pigeon lamp embodies this imagery, suspended between dream and reality, and testifies to the technical mastery typical of Les Lalanne production.
The auction also offers other important proposals in the field of lighting. These include Ingo Maurer’s Uchiwa lamp in wood and rice paper, estimated between €10,000 and €15, 000, and Lapo Binazzi’s floor lamp in blue and orange lacquered metal with yellow neon, estimated between €13,000 and €18, 000. The Apus model ceiling lamp by Studio A.R.D.I.T.I., made of metal in 1975 and estimated between 4,500 and 6,500 euros, completes the picture.
There is no shortage of well-known pieces related to table art and ceramics. These include a jug by Guido Gambone from 1955 with an estimate of 3,000 to 5,000 euros, and a red and white glass table set signed Fulvio Bianconi and Carlo Scarpa, produced by Venini around 1950. The pieces, characterized by shapes inspired by shells and corals, are valued between 5,000 and 7,000 euros and represent an important example of Italian experimentation in postwar avant-garde design.
