Van Gogh Museum launches a perfume inspired by Van Gogh's Sunflowers

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the Floral Street house are launching the first perfume inspired by Vincent Van Gogh: it is called Sunflower Pop and takes us back to the Sunflowers of 1889 and the optimistic period the painter spent in Provence.

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam had announced in early June that it was starting a collaboration with the British house Floral Street, which specializes in eco-friendly and affordable perfumes, to launch fragrances inspired by the art of Vincent van Gogh. And now the first product has arrived on time: called Sunflower Pop, it is an eau de parfum with fruity and citrus tones, and is inspired by the optimism of the Sunflowers preserved in the Dutch museum. Van Gogh painted his Sunflowers at a time of great vital momentum during his stay in Arles, Provence: the sunflowers, executed in three different shades of yellow, were believed by Van Gogh to be a symbol of happiness, but also of gratitude and loyalty, and consequently had a special meaning for him, which the perfume aims to evoke.

“If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere,” Vincent van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo on April 30, 1874, from London, and Van Gogh’s passion for the natural world is the fuse that inspired this vegan and cruelty-free fragrance, created by maître perfumer Jérôme Epinette, known for his ability to use sustainable natural raw materials that are traceable to their source. “The idea,” Epinette explained, “was to capture the vibrancy and beauty of the South of France, and somehow also the passing of the day. I started with impactful top notes, with a burst of morning sunshine that comes alive in citrus and fruit, while the heart brings the warmth of the afternoon with a rich and colorful floral aroma. The base notes lead us into the evening, with the sweetness of poppy and a touch of unexpected warmth that makes the scent fun, but also really sumptuous.”

The perfume includes natural bergamot from Calabria, which provides an herbaceous, fresh, peppery, slightly sweet fragrance and is responsible for its citrus notes, as is mandarin, used to give the perfume its bright, summery tones. Also in the compound are honey accords, rendered through a vegan blend designed to mimic the sweet, amber aroma of fresh honey. Finally, olfactory notes at Bellini are also added to give the fragrance a “pop” effervescence. The new Sunflower Pop fragrance is now available on Floral Street’s website and will soon be available on the Van Gogh Museum’s online store in Amsterdam. Costs: 22 euros for the 10-ml bottle, 62 euros for the 50-ml fragrance, 100 euros for the 100-ml one.

“I am honored that Floral Street has been chosen as the Van Gogh Museum’s first fragrance partner,” said Michelle Feeney, founder of the British maison. “Vincent van Gogh’s quote ’If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere’ is what inspired me to create this sustainable fragrance that celebrates and respects the environment. Through this collaboration, we can tell our story in a new way, where the beauty of art and fragrance meet.”

“Through our collaboration,” says Emilie Gordenker, Director General of the Van Gogh Museum, “we have captured the bright and vibrant gold and yellow hues of Van Gogh’s iconic Sunflowers in a unique and sustainable fragrance, creating a fresh and different way to experience Van Gogh’s art.”
