Florence high school students explain museum works for Alternative School Work Experience

For the second year in a row, high school students in Florence will explain museum works as part of the Alternative School Work Program.

For the second year in a row, high school students from Florence and the surrounding area will act as “guides” in some of the city’s museums between May and June. It’s the Ambassadors of Art initiative, proposed by the Florentine Civic Museums and Palazzo Medici Riccardi in collaboration with MUS.E: Florentine high school students, who the organizers assure are “perfectly prepared from a historical and artistic point of view and ready to welcome the public” (so reads a note), will explain the works and environments of four museums: Palazzo Vecchio, Santa Maria Novella, Museo Stefano Bardini and Palazzo Medici Riccardi. This is all within the framework of theAlternanza Scuola Lavoro: a number of classes from Florence secondary schools have guaranteed their presence at a busy schedule of visits and training sessions in the museums and, the note says, have made themselves available “for an in-depth study of the materials” and to “lend their support to the public of the museums to offer a more in-depth and meaningful visit.”

Conducting the visits will be students from the “Antonio Gramsci” Scientific High School and “Giuseppe Peano” Linguistic High School in Florence, the “Ernesto Balducci” Scientific High School in Pontassieve, and the “A.M. Enriques Agnoletti” High School in Campi Bisenzio. The whole thing will take place from May 4 to June 2: the youngsters will be recognizable by the Ambassadors of Art t-shirts (for the occasion made and offered by Luisa Via Roma, moreover) and those who wish can avail themselves of their explanation. The service is free, needs no reservations and is available only on weekends (dates: May 4, 5, 11, 12, 25 and 26, June 1 and 2). At Palazzo Vecchio in the morning from 10 a.m. to noon and in the afternoon from 1 to 5 p.m., at Santa Maria Novella from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., at the Bardini Museum from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 to 5 p.m., and at Palazzo Medici Riccardi from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 to 5 p.m.

Of course: the fact remains that many may not take this initiative well, if one thinks that the youngsters will be going to perform a type of service usually reserved for properly trained professional staff who devote years of study to be able to guide the public through the halls of a museum. It is therefore to be expected that, once again this year, the initiative will cause much discussion....
