Palazzo Vecchio's Vasari stairways to be restored after more than two decades

Vasari's twin staircases leading from Michelozzo's Cortile to the Salone dei Cinquecento will be restored after more than two decades.

More than two decades after the last intervention, restoration work has begun on the Vasarian staircases of the Palazzo Vecchio. Their appearance appeared worn by time, so it became necessary to clean and restore the ceilings, stairways and walls.

The work on the large twin staircases that lead visitors from Michelozzo’s Courtyard to the Salone dei Cinquecento will cost 150 thousand euros, and in order to create as little inconvenience as possible for the public, the small construction sites will advance little by little.

Thanks to the Cantieri creativi project, curated by theAcademy of Fine Arts in collaboration with the City’s Fine Arts and Factory Service of Palazzo Vecchio, the scaffolding will be “hidden” by decorations and artistic solutions created by students of the Academy’s two-year Visual Arts and Expressive Languages course, which have already been accomplished on some of the external fences of construction sites in the Florentine historic center.
