Carrara, a public art project for the Stadio dei Marmi involves artists, experts and students

In Carrara, a public art project involving artists, experts and students will lead to the creation of a work for the Stadio dei Marmi.

Public art, digital development and social cohesion. Orticanoodles and the Stadio dei Marmi: this is the title of the project of the Municipality of Carrara curated by Alessandro Romanini for Toscanaincontemporanea2020.

The project is developed as a course consisting of a series of meetings on a Zoom platform, where artists, art historians, curators and professionals in the field address the theme of public art in its various declinations, extending reflection on the concept of monument, the symbolic and historical value of marble, Carrara’s fundamental role and contribution in the history of art, and the territory’s potential in the field of contemporary art and culture.

The initiative stems from the intervention proposal of Orticanoodles, artists of the urban sphere on an international scale, for the most symbolic wall of the Stadio dei Marmi, that of Curva Nord “Lauro Perini” and Gradinata “Baffo.” The promotion of the area is thus conveyed through public art and contemporary culture.

In the project for the Carrara Stadium, Orticanoodles showcases the iconic works of white marble sculpture created by great Italian artists with the prized local material, evoking, celebrating and reappropriating it in a collective dimension.

The educational track addresses the general issue of planning a public art intervention and focuses on the one planned for the stadium. The didactic meetings and the theoretical-practical workshop (reserved for the fourth classes of the Liceo Artistico A.Gentileschi of Carrara) accompany, document and deepen the process of elaboration and execution of the final sketch, developing it in a participatory and shared way. The workshop conducted by the artists will focus on the genesis of the work of the Stadio dei Marmi, the meaning of the images represented, the symbolic value of the stadium as a monument and its specific context, but also on the tools of graphic design and previsualization, the techniques of realization and processing of digital projects in a virtual environment through the technological support of Red Studio.

Two outputs are planned to be presented publicly on November 30: the first is the result of the workshop, namely the 3D digital maquette of the future intervention of Orticanoodles; the second is a documentary film consisting of the speakers’ speeches and enriched with additional material for in-depth analysis. Both will be viewable on web multiplatform for free use or as a replicable course for other schools and will also be downloadable via QR code affixed on the stadium wall.

As for the students, the objectives of the course are various: to involve them in a reflection on public art, from classical monuments to urban art forms in contemporary languages; to stimulate them for a meditation on the strong historical connection of the local area with the highest artistic production; and to transmit them digital skills for the design and previsualization of a public art intervention, promoting them to individual and collective initiative.

The general interventions will be attended by the three-year classes of the graphic design, figurative and architectural addresses, while the workshop is reserved for the fourth classes, which will continue the classroom work during the school year to put into practice what they have learned and produce their own digital work.
