The Ministry of Culture has issued a circular setting out procedures and criteria for the submission of proposals aimed at theacquisition of works of contemporary art to enrich the collections of state museums and places of culture. The measure, issued by the General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity, makes available for the financial year 2026 total resources of 271,772.20 euros.
The circular is aimed at institutions belonging to the Ministry of Culture that have collections or sections dedicated to contemporary art and are able to document structured programming in this area. Proposals may concern the purchase, for consideration, of one or more works made in the last seventy years by Italian and international artists, both living and non-living, provided they are characterized by a relevant cultural interest such as to motivate their entry into the state heritage. The initiative aims on the one hand to fill historical gaps in public collections and on the other to support contemporary artistic production.
Funding will be able to cover up to 100 percent of eligible costs, including tax charges, including not only the cost of acquiring the works but also any incidental expenses closely related to the acquisition, such as transportation, insurance, inventorying and setting up. Expenses related to the production of new works and enhancement or promotion activities, however, remain excluded. Proposals must be submitted by Jan. 12, 2026 exclusively by certified e-mail and will be evaluated by a commission appointed by the General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity, without the preparation of merit rankings.
The decree of the Ministry of Culture, issued following the evaluation of the proposals, will define the procedures for the allocation and disbursement of grants, providing for an advance of up to 80 percent of the funding and the final balance after the final accounting and the actual acquisition of the works in the public heritage of the state.
