Triennale Milano has opened to the public Gioco, a new space designed for children of different age groups, included in the complete redesign of the Park Plan, which opened last May. The area, conceived as a place open to all and usable throughout the day, offers an environment where imagination and creativity can develop through active or contemplative activities. Gioco hosts meetings and workshops curated by Triennale’s educational department, but also remains freely available to families visiting the institution. The creation of Giocorapp representsa step consistent with Triennale’s Strategic Plan 2022-2026 and the Manifesto for Families, presented in February 2025, which defines principles of welcome and accessibility aimed at all members of households. The initiative is part of a journey to make the Triennale a usable, inclusive and versatile place even for those visiting the museum with children.
The space was designed by Luca Cipelletti’s AR.CH.IT studio , while the furniture was developed by French studio smarin, which specializes in spaces of interaction and collective invention. The furniture uses modular cork blocks and fir tops, selected for sustainability, durability and sensory qualities. Assembled without nails or screws, the blocks can be combined to create seating, desks, dividers, loungers, storage or play structures, providing flexibility that allows the space to be quickly reconfigured as needed: from play area to screening room, dance studio to relaxation space.
Modular elements make it easy to free up the space when needed, encouraging spontaneous and creative uses. The space was also designed considering the practical needs of families: there are areas for parking strollers, personal lockers, a water dispenser and a bathroom with a changing table. The Cucina Triennale restaurant and café, located on the Park Floor, offers a dedicated children’s menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner, providing continuity between cultural activities and food services. Gioco remains open Tuesday through Sunday, 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., offering freely usable materials for play and interaction. Tools are available for building, designing, drawing, encouraging concentration and creative thinking. A selection of illustrated books and albums in Italian and English includes international children’s authors, books in CAA (Augmentative Alternative Communication), silent books and introductory texts to LIS (Italian Sign Language). Publications also include Triennale’s Junior Albums, illustrated volumes with activities, trivia and insights into exhibitions.
Inside the space are workshops and laboratories for children, activities dedicated to schools of all levels and educational experiences inspired by the exhibitions and shows in Triennale’s programming. Until Nov. 9, initiatives will be dedicated to the International Exhibition’s Inequalities 24 exhibition. Gioco also hosts public program meetings dedicated to families, such as the Let’s Talk! Family Workshop cycle, which addresses issues of sentimental education, nutrition and gender identity, offering paths to accompany growth for both adults and children.
The inauguration of Gioco is part of the redevelopment of the entire Park Plan, the most important architectural and functional intervention of the Palace of Art carried out to date. The intervention involved all the interiors of the Park Plan, amounting to 2,300 square meters, and the outdoor areas, comprising 7,300 square meters of garden, portico and facade, with a focus on collaborative design. The Theater Hall had been the subject of a separate intervention in 2020. Triennale Milano emphasizes the support of partners who made Gioco possible: Education Partner Scalo Milano, Textile Partner Dedar and institutional partners Deloitte and Fondazione Deloitte, Lavazza Group and Salone del Mobile.Milano.
