Sabina Magrini, director of theFlorence State Archives, has passed away in Grosseto, at the age of 52. She was hospitalized in serious condition in the Maremma city’s hospital after falling ill while scuba diving in the sea off Livorno, in front of the Scogli Piatti.
A Roman, with dual Italian and British citizenship, Magrini, after graduating in Literature from La Sapienza University in 1993 and following a long course of training (diploma in Greek Paleography at the Vatican School of Paleography, Diplomatics and Archival Studies, School of Specialization for Conservators of Archival and Book Heritage at the University of Cassino, PhD in Greek and Latin Paleography at La Sapienza University), had begun a brilliant career that would take her to the highest ranks of the Ministry of Culture. In 1999, after her doctorate, she joined the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana in Florence as Librarian-Director, a position she held until 2010. This was followed by a transfer to the State Library of Trieste until 2012, then from 2012 to 2015 the direction of the Palatine Library of Parma. From 2015 he held management positions at the Gallerie Estensi in Modena and the Complesso Monumentale della Pilotta, then in 2018 the direction of the Istituto Centrale per i Beni Sonori e Audiovisivi and, in July 2020, the arrival at the Archivio di Stato di Firenze, of which he became director. As of August 2020, he was also interim Archival and Bibliographic Superintendent of Tuscany.
A member of several scientific committees of various institutes, her action was fundamental in the acquisition for the state collections of some important documents such as the correspondence between Giuseppe Verdi and Salvatore Cammarano, purchased by Sotheby’s in London. She also handled the expert opinion on behalf of MiBACT in the infamous case of the manuscripts stolen from the Girolamini Library in Naples.
“I learn with sorrow and dismay of the untimely death of Sabina Magrini, director of the State Archives of Florence,” said Culture Minister Dario Franceschini. “I embrace the family, friends and colleagues who, throughout her entire career, were able to appreciate her passion, professionalism and preparation. The Ministry of Culture has lost a valuable executive.”
