New technologies for MIC Faenza: App and video game pave the way for digital museum

MIC Faenza concludes two stages of the "MIC 4.0 - From Digitization to fruition" project, presenting a free App and video game designed to make knowledge of museum collections more accessible and engaging through interactive and multimedia experiences.

The International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza takes a new step toward digital innovation with the conclusion of two important phases of the project MIC 4.0 - From Digitization to fruition. A bridge between the historical heritage and the digital frontiers of ceramic art, funded under the ERDF Regional Program 2021-2027. The goal of the project is to expand public accessibility and participation, combining the enhancement of the artistic heritage with technological tools capable of making the visit more dynamic and engaging. Among the achievements is the new MIC Faenza App, available for free on Google Play and App Store. Developed by Mango Mobile, the app allows visitors to explore the museum’s collections through guided tours, audio and text written in a colloquial tone, designed to accompany the visitor in a personalized experience. The content, available in Italian and English, is designed for different audiences, adults and children, with special attention to accessibility needs.

The App offers the possibility to learn more about the works on display thanks to dedicated fact sheets, videos with special content and constant updates on the museum’s calendar of activities and events. An interactive section also allows users to navigate their way through the thematic routes, making enjoyment more intuitive and participatory. To encourage discovery of the app and encourage a return of visitors, MIC Faenza has launched the Download, Explore and Return promotion. Those who download the app and visit the museum receive a free ticket, valid for a second admission within a year, with an invitation to spend more time in the MIC’s vast permanent collection, considered one of the richest and most comprehensive in the world in the field of artistic ceramics.

Alongside the App, another important piece of the MIC 4.0 project is the video game Fragments - Fragments from the Future, developed by the studio Indici Opponibili. The game, accessible directly from the app or from the official website www.micfaenza.org, is aimed at an under-30 audience and in particular the 14-19 age group, with the goal of bringing new generations closer to museum heritage through the language of gaming. Fragments - Fragments from the Future is a puzzle game that transforms the discovery of MIC works into a narrative adventure set in a dystopian future. The plot unfolds in a world devastated by a new ice age, where humanity survives in the ruins of a lost past. Exploring a virtual, desolate Faenza, the player is called upon to recover artifacts buried under the snow to reconstruct the memory of the planet’s ancient inhabitants.

Each level of the game involves puzzles and brain teasers to solve in order to find the fragments of the artworks. By recomposing objects, players unlock collectible cards that tell the story and trivia of the museum’s ceramics, creating a direct link between the play experience and knowledge of the art heritage. Interaction with digital content thus becomes a means of stimulating the curiosity and participation of younger people, who can informally learn more about the history and techniques of ceramics. An additional element of connection between the virtual and the real world is represented by the free ticket that players receive at the end of the game. The free ticket to the MIC also provides access to a secret level, available only by physically visiting the museum. The digital experience thus extends to the concrete dimension of the visit, inviting the public to a return to direct contact with the works.

The MIC 4.0 - From digitization to fruition project is part of the initiatives supported by the ERDF Regional Program 2021-2027, which aims to foster the integration of digital technologies in Emilia-Romagna’s cultural and museum contexts. The intent is to broaden participation, improve accessibility and make the visiting experience more interactive and inclusive, especially for new generations.
