A zombie video game to revalue an area and raise awareness of the beauty of a city, Carrara

The video game 'Game Over Carrara,' a zombie apocalypse to raise awareness of the city's beauty, reaches its third episode.

Imagine a town in northern Italy devastated by a zombie apocalypse, and an inhabitant waking up tied to a chair, with no recollection of anything that happened: so begins Game Over Carrara, a successful point-and-click video game set in Carrara, starring the town’s real inhabitants, and conceived with the aim of re-evaluating the area. A graphic adventure created to highlight the degradation situation of a beautiful city of ancient origins, famous worldwide for its white marble, and thus to emphasize the urgency of revitalizing a city that has much to offer.

The video game, after more than twenty thousand downloads (65 percent of them in the United States) of the first two episodes, is now in its third installment, landing on the crowdfunding site Kickstarter where it has been since Wednesday, December 18, with a goal of getting 5 thousand euros to fund the third episode (and 30 thousand for the whole season). Carrara Game Over was entirely developed by one person, Elvis Morelli, who had the idea of “re-evaluating the city of Carrara, its beauty and history,” as he himself told us, “in an apocalyptic videogame key, just as a contradiction to the beauty of a city that, like many Italian villages rich in history, is becoming increasingly deserted.” Thus, the game takes us to a ghostly Carrara, to be traversed through questions, puzzles and an articulated narrative: and, as Elvis Morelli tells us again, “even in a post-apocalyptic scenario, Carrara remains beautiful.” The video game, in fact, takes users to discover the wonders of the city: the Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral, the 19th-century Politeama Theater, the Renaissance Piazza Alberica and many other places.

At the moment, the first two episodes and the demo of the Christmas version are available for Android and for PC and Mac, which can be downloaded for free thanks to the more than forty sponsors who ended up at the center of the video game’s narrative, which involves more than seventy characters and, as mentioned, many places in Carrara. Now, however, a small contribution from Game Over Carrara ’s fans on Kickstarter is necessary, the author makes known, in order to reach all possible goals. Depending on the contribution there is a reward: from the game itself (€5 half price exclusive to the campaign), to becoming the protagonist of Game Over Carrara or, even, designing a chapter together with Elvis Morelli.
