From Sept. 24 to Dec. 27, 2022, Bologna's Studio G7 gallery will host a new solo exhibition by David Tremlett in which the British artist will show works on paper created from 2019 to 2021.

From September 24 to December 27, 2022, the Studio G7 gallery in Bologna inaugurates the new exhibition season by hosting in its spaces the fourth solo exhibition of British artist David Tremlett (St. Austell, Cornwall, 1945), entitled David Tremlett. 2019 2020 2021 works on paper, with a critical text by Marinella Paderni.

After the last exhibition in 2008, which saw the artist create a large wall drawing capable of involving and ideally uniting all the walls of the exhibition space, in this new project the architecture of the gallery becomes a metaphor for time. In particular, the artist presentsunpublished works on paper made between 2019 and 2021. This is precisely the time interval that sees Tremlett’s work change, shifting the so-called “space of ideas” from the dimension of travel to that of the studio. If before in fact the artist traced the world and long distances for new geometries and architectures to be formalized and presented in public and private spaces, the new way of traveling has seen the artist’s studio and the places in Europe familiar to Tremlett become the center of thought and creative process.

Following this new approach to the work, the gallery will be divided into three moments, ideally witnessing the three years (2019, 2020, 2021) in which the artist has had to move his idea of travel away from the creative process. The works on paper are the result of a reflection that draws from the past and, aware of the present, turns its gaze to the future.

David Tremlett studied sculpture at the Royal College of Art in London. In the late 1970s, while traveling in Australia, Africa, Iran, Afghanistan and India, he came into contact with large polychrome surfaces covered by hand using pigments; he thus discovered colored powders, which were perfect for his needs as a traveler. The small format characteristic of his early work is replaced by large-scale media. Alongside graphite comes the use of color, from green to brown to warm, iridescent colors. Beginning in the 1980s, the practice of wall drawing gradually becomes the artist’s principal means of expression. Over time, this technique evolves, expanding both the spectrum of colors and the media on which to work, in a practice defined by the artist himself as “sculptural,” striving to define space and the entire volume. The spreading of pigments through the use of bare hands takes place not only on the walls of architectural spaces, but also on paper.

David Tremlett realizes wall drawings all over the world: we remember the interventions at the Chapel of Barolo, La Morra, together with Sol LeWitt; British Embassy, Berlin; British Council, Nairobi; Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Villenauxe-la-Grande, France; Tate Britain and Bloomberg HQ, London; Synagogue of Zamosc; Church of Coazzolo, Asti; Chapel of Relais San Maurizio, Santo Stefano Belbo. The artist participates in numerous solo and group exhibitions, in Italy and abroad; spaces in which he exhibits include Museum of Modern Art, New York; Stedeljik Museum, Amsterdam; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Juan Miro Foundation, Barcelona; at the Galleria Civica d’Arte Contemporanea, Trento; Musée de Grenoble, France; Centro d’Arte Contemporanea Pecci, Prato.
