Museums and libraries: online course on hospitality as a strategic lever

The National Heritage School launches "The Art of Welcoming," a free online course dedicated to museum, archival and library staff to strengthen skills, tools and awareness about welcoming as a central element of the visitor experience.

The National School of Heritage and Cultural Activities has made available online the new training course The Art of Welcoming: principles and practices of hospitality in museums, archives and libraries, designed for those who work in direct contact with visitors and users of cultural venues. The training course aims to strengthen skills and operational tools, emphasizing the strategic importance of reception in the cultural enjoyment experience. Aimed primarily at reception and security staff, the course is also aimed at those working in educational and communication services, managers and, more generally, all those who work in public and private cultural institutions or in companies in the sector. The goal is to enhance the ability to listen to and understand the needs of the public, improving the quality of the relationship between users and institutions.

The course emphasizes how reception constitutes a professional skill based on listening, relating and effective communication. The training proposes a vision in which hospitality becomes a shared principle within every cultural organization, directly influencing the visitor experience and standing as a pillar of the mission of museums, archives and libraries. Through theoretical content and practical tools, the course highlights shared responsibilities and tasks, highlighting the importance of observation and listening to build an effective relationship with the public. Special attention is paid to the concrete needs of operators, who are provided with interaction techniques and operational strategies to manage communication, making spaces, services and cultural content more accessible.

The course is part of the e-learning offering of Personeper, the national training plan promoted by the Ministry of Culture’s General Directorate of Museums and the National School of Heritage and Cultural Activities. The initiative, funded by the European Union as part of the PNRR Culture 4.0 - NextGenerationEU, aims to improve the accessibility of Italian cultural institutions and places. The duration of the course is five hours and can be taken free of charge until June 30, 2026 on the distance learning platform of the National School of Heritage and Cultural Activities. At the end of the training, an Open Badge will be issued certifying the skills acquired. The new course is part of Personeper’s on-demand offerings, complementing other titles already available online. These include Cultural Accessibility: Principles and Practices, an introductory course that addresses visible and invisible barriers and the regulatory framework, and Designing Accessible, a specialized course for architects and designers co-organized with the CNAPPC, dedicated to accessible design in the interiors of cultural venues and at the urban scale.
