Pompeii opens a restaurant in the excavations: can food enhance historical heritage?

The new Pompeii Chora Restaurant opens in the Casina dell'Aquila and offers Park products curated by The Tulip Cooperative, taking visitors on a discovery of a newly emerged fresco.

Inside the archaeological excavations of Pompeii, the Pompeii Chora Restaurant, a restaurant that has been operating for some time in the Casina dell’Aquila, a 19th-century building located in the center of the archaeological area, was inaugurated. The inauguration was accompanied by a presentation of the latest discoveries conducted in the excavations, offering visitors the opportunity to eat meals prepared with products from the Archaeological Park, but also to get closer to an important new archaeological find . During the event, excavation director Gabriel Zuchtriegel explained the most relevant discovery of the year: a fresco of considerable artistic and historical value, which emerged in a sumptuous banquet hall, located not far from the Casina dell’Aquila, in the center of the ancient city, within Regio IX. The fresco depicts a Dionysian theme, confirming the decorative richness of Pompeii’s dwellings and presenting new insights into the city’s convivial and cultural practices before the eruption of AD 79.

“In inclusion, it doesn’t matter so much what we say, because in words we are all for inclusion; it matters what we actually accomplish,” said director Gabriel Zuchtriegel at the presentation. “We are happy that a synergy is emerging between the Pompeii restaurant and the Tulip boys, because it is an added value. To come here is to know that even behind so-called additional services like catering there is an ethic and the beauty of doing activities together, without excluding anyone, is a message we give to the whole world that comes to Pompeii. We have the first social farm in an archaeological area and it is something no less important than the great archaeological discoveries.”

The inauguration was attended by President Chiara Nasi of the Cirfood Cooperative, which was awarded the concession for all catering services within the Archaeological Park. The presence of children from the cultural and social farm “Parvula Domus,” managed by the cooperative Il Tulipano, committed to social inclusion and integration of people with disabilities, involved in the production and harvesting of products offered to visitors of the restaurant. The Pompeii Chora Restaurant fits into the Park’s overall restaurant offerings, flanking the self-service restaurant and the Chora Café & Wine Bar, as well as the cafeteria currently located at the Quadriportico, pending the renovation of the premises at Vicolo del Foro. The dining experience is enriched by the display of works by contemporary artists, who interpret the journey through history and beauty in a modern way, creating a dialogue between Pompeii’s ancient heritage and current creativity.
